First go to the forums, then click on "Enter Old Forum Here" and it takes you to his old forum site, which still has a wealth of information on it. For example with the above scenario you'd want to go to Radioactive Drugs, then print out the NRC Table for your mom (or send it to her). You may also want to try Kellymom.com too.

Autism
Researchers of the Colorado State University study concluded that there is a strong predictive relationship between pitocin in labor and subsequent ADHD development in childhood. The occurrence of ADHD in the pitocin group was 67.1% as opposed to 35.6% in the non-exposure group. The natural ebb and flow of nature is commonly overridden in our ever technology-reliant world, and often with risky results. As science continues to investigate invasive interventions in natural life events, such as childbirth, the dangers of intervening with nature are exposed.

Researchers of the pitocin study stated, 'these findings suggest a pitocin-linked, interactive constellation of mechanisms initiates a neuro-developmental cascade that disrupts cognitive executive functioning, kindling ADHD.' Researchers also mention concerns over deprivation of oxygen and prolonged exposure to hypertonic uterine contractions along with a combination of other factors in the development of ADHD in pitocin-exposed children. The risks of elective induction is known, and yet hospitals have failed to respond with policy changes restricting interventions for medical necessity only. Science is just beginning to understand the importance of the natural initiation of labor.

Autism & Low Birth Weight - http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/17/health/low-birth-weight-autism/index.html

The ADHD research can be helpful because the 4 A's (autism, Adhd, allergies, and asthma) all have similar triggers and treatments. There is lots of info and education on prevention of the 4 A's, but too much to put here. Intervention free birth and breastfeeding are the best starts, but nothing is ever full-proof. Our environment is unfortunately full of triggers. :(

About the pitocin/autism spectrum link--one of the things they are researching is that when a synthetic hormone is given, the body naturally decreases its own production of the hormone that is being augmented or replaced. So when pitocin is given, the body's natural oxytocin production is lowered. That's why they have to keep increasing and increasing the pitocin dosages. The mom's body's oxytocin level continues to drop. They've found that children with autism spectrum disorders have lower oxytocin levels than normal, so they are looking at the possible effect pitocin has on lowering the oxytocin levels in the baby.

Epidurals and Autism

At the 2001 APPPAH conference, Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona explained a presumed mechanism for the pitocin/epidural/autism connection.  Because the newborn neurological system does not yet have the protective myelin layers around the brain and nerves, they are inflamed by the bupivicaine used in epidural anesthesia; it destabilizes the membranes of the developing brain..  When pitocin is also used (either for induction or augmentation), this results in greater exposure to the oxytocin family than would occur in a normal birth.  Because of the nerve inflammation, the nerves develop an adverse reaction to the high levels of oxytocin . . . sort of an allergic reaction.  Later in life, when the child responds to social situations by the normal production of oxytocin, this serves as a trigger for the allergic reaction to oxytocin, and the child develops an adverse response to social situations.
Breastfeeding is a social situation, stimulating oxytocin production in both the mother and baby.  Prolonged exposure to both pitocin and epidural during labor could trigger the same sort of aversive response to breastfeeding.
[Ed: People sometimes ask why there would be a difference between pitocin and natural oxytocin.  There may be chemical differences, but one obvious difference is that pitocin is often given before the uterus is fully mature, so the uterus hasn't acquired all the oxytocin receptors of a term pregnancy.  So the amounts of pitocin used are often much greater than the body would naturally produce.]
